Swatch are never afraid entering into interesting collaborations with contemporary icons and their recent range from famous London photographer and cinematographer Rankin, a man who has shot countless campaigns for the brand is certainly one of the most compelling to date. The plastic watches feature a plain strap, in black or white, with a close up shot showcasing the abstract beauty of the human eye in a variety of colours.
There is something slightly jarring having an eyeball sat on your wrist, staring up at you but the use of rich colours on the dial, contrasting with the monochrome strap is quite striking. As a man who uses his eyes as the tools to create his craft, there is also something quite fitting about Rankin featuring an eye.
Famous for his ability to provide an insight into the lives of his photographic subjects, this motif does fit perfectly within the Rankin world. This concept also seems quite perfect for a watch, as it is often the smallest most intimate hidden details within a watch case that bring the whole piece together into a functioning item.
My favourite version, the Brownscape, can be purchased here
It is lovely to see that great style and conceptual design can be applied to a low price point product, making Rankin's creativity available to everyone. It's something that you have to admire about Swatch, they sure make plastic look fantastic.
